About Forest of Galtres Golf Club

Forest of Galtres Golf Club lies around two miles north of York's ring road, in Wigginton, taking its name from the ancient forest that once covered this part of North Yorkshire. Despite sitting so close to the ring road, the course occupies a quiet position within the surrounding countryside rather than feeling bound up with the city's edge. The layout plays over eighteen holes to a par of 72, with a standard scratch score of 71, and is built on flat ground with raised greens rather than any significant natural elevation change. That flat parkland character makes for straightforward walking throughout the round, with the raised greens adding definition to the approach shots rather than relying on slopes or contours elsewhere on the course. The club's proximity to York gives it an easy draw from golfers based in the city who want a course within a short drive rather than a longer trip out into the wider Yorkshire countryside. Set within what remains of the historic Forest of Galtres, the club combines a convenient location close to York with a course laid out on level ground, offering a well-defined test built around its raised putting surfaces rather than the terrain around them.
