Despite sharing its name with the North Yorkshire market town, this Malton lies close to Royston, on Cambridgeshire's southern edge where the county meets Hertfordshire and Essex. The land here forms part of the chalk belt running north-east from the Chilterns, gently rolling rather than flat, and close enough to the River Cam's upper reaches to sit within its wider valley. Cambridge lies a short distance to the north, and the surrounding villages are typical of this arable corner of the county, dominated by cereal farming on light, free-draining soil. Royston's position at the junction of two ancient routes, the Icknield Way and Ermine Street, made the area a natural crossing point long before it became a golfing destination, and that same accessibility now puts the course within easy reach of the A10 and A505. The Cambridgeshire countryside around Malton is quieter and less visited than the university city itself, giving the course a rural setting despite its relative proximity to it.
