Middleton lies on the southern edge of Leeds, a district that grew around coal mining and later council housing through the twentieth century, part of the ring of former industrial suburbs that surround the city centre. Middleton Park itself, one of the larger areas of public parkland in Leeds, includes ancient woodland alongside the golf course, playing fields and a preserved stretch of the old Middleton Railway, one of the earliest railways in the world, originally built to move coal from local pits. This part of West Yorkshire sits in the broad river valley of the Aire, where the coalfield that once dominated the local economy has given way to housing, retail and leisure use since the pits closed. As a municipal course, it forms part of the network of council-run golf facilities that many English cities developed in the interwar and postwar periods to widen access to the game beyond private membership clubs. Leeds today is one of the largest cities in the north of England, and its southern suburbs like Middleton retain a distinct identity shaped by that mining and railway heritage.
