About Onneley Golf Club

Onneley Golf Club lies near Crewe, in the part of Cheshire that borders Staffordshire and Shropshire, an area characterised by quiet farmland and small villages rather than large towns. Crewe itself grew rapidly in the nineteenth century as a railway town, but the countryside around it, including the area near Onneley, has retained a more rural character, with dairy farming and mixed agriculture shaping much of the landscape. This part of south Cheshire sits at a natural crossing point between several counties, and golf clubs in the area often draw members from across these boundaries rather than from a single town. The gently undulating ground typical of south Cheshire provides a suitable base for golf course construction, with enough variation in level to create interest without the steeper gradients found further north towards the Peak District. Onneley itself is a small village, and a golf club of this name reflects a pattern seen across rural England, where local clubs became a fixture of village life well away from major population centres. For golfers based around Crewe or in the neighbouring Staffordshire towns, Onneley Golf Club offers a course within a short drive, set in the kind of open countryside that typifies this corner of Cheshire.
