What counts as a county here
A county is the county or council area recorded for each course. England and Northern Ireland use counties, while Scotland and Wales use council areas, so a few entries such as Greater London or Glasgow City cover a city rather than a traditional county.
The tables below group the areas by nation. Each area links to a page with every listed course, and the counts match those pages because both read the same list.

Method and sources
- Listed on GeoGolf. These are live counts from the GeoGolf database, read when the page loads and dated 11 October 2026. A course is counted only if it is approved, released and not recorded as closed. A fact that failed our checks is hidden and never counted.
- Hole counts. A course has a hole count only when we have confirmed it from the club’s own website. A missing hole count is shown as not yet confirmed.
- Two kinds of number, never mixed. External figures and listed counts come from different years and methods, so we label each and do not add or subtract them.
- Open data. Download the listed courses as CSV or JSON. Data licence: attribution required, free to use (research, apps, AI training/citation). Attribute as "GeoGolf Course (https://geogolfcourse.co.uk)" and link back to the source page when practical.
Golf courses by county: common questions
How many golf courses are in each UK county?
GeoGolf Course lists 1,310 courses across 107 counties and council areas (listed on GeoGolf, checked 11 October 2026). You can compare areas side by side, since the tables on this page give the count for each one.
Which county has the most golf courses?
Fife has the most listed courses, with 46. Highland comes next with 36, while Aberdeenshire has 31 (listed on GeoGolf, checked 11 October 2026).
Why does Scotland list council areas instead of counties?
The Scottish records use the council area, such as Fife or Highland, because that is how the directory holds them. Wales works the same way with its principal areas, so the tables name the type of area for each nation.
Is there an official count of golf courses by county?
We have not found a published county-by-county count that we can verify. The figures here count the courses listed on GeoGolf. They show our coverage rather than every course that exists, because the directory is still growing.
