Golf near Cardiff in numbers

By distance from Cardiff, 11 are within 10km of the centre, 18 are 10 to 25km out and 36 are 25 to 50km out. Because these are straight-line figures, the drive is usually longer.

The courses fall in 15 counties. Somerset holds the most (10), while the rest are in Vale of Glamorgan (8), Cardiff (6), Newport (6), Rhondda Cynon Taf (6), Bridgend (5), plus nine more counties.

12 courses list a length, from 5,884 to 6,733 yards. 16 list a par, from 68 to 72. Because tees differ from club to club, treat these figures as a guide.

8 of the 65 courses have a listed founding year, from 1893 to 1992. 2 of them were founded before 1900. However, the rest have no year on record, so the oldest club here may be older than it looks.

The closest other city pages are Bristol (41km), Swansea (55km) and Bath (58km). Courses between two cities can appear on both pages, since each page covers its own 50km circle.

Each page measures from one point in the centre of Cardiff, and a course appears only if it has a map position. As a result, a club just outside the circle is not listed here, although it may be on a neighbouring page.

Royal Porthcawl and Southerndown

Royal Porthcawl sits on the Glamorgan coast, west of Cardiff. The club was founded in 1891 and moved to its present links in 1895. It has hosted the Amateur Championship several times, the Walker Cup in 1995 and the Senior Open in 2014, 2017 and 2023. Visitors can play, although early booking is wise. Our guide to the best links courses puts it in context.

Southerndown, near Ogmore-by-Sea, opened in 1905 on high downland above the coast. It is not a true links, but the turf is firm and the views are wide. The two clubs make a good pair for a two-day trip.

Celtic Manor and the city clubs

The Celtic Manor Resort, off the M4 at Newport, hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup on its Twenty Ten Course. It was the first course built specially for the event, and the resort also staged the Wales Open. Our guide to championship golf courses covers other big-event venues.

Inside the city, Cardiff Golf Club and Radyr are traditional parkland clubs. Radyr is a members' club, so contact it before you visit.

West, east and across the Severn

To the west, Swansea and the Gower add clifftop golf, such as Pennard. See golf courses near Swansea, and our Pembrokeshire guide for the far south-west of Wales.

The M4 runs east to Newport and west towards Porthcawl, and the A48 crosses the Vale of Glamorgan towards Southerndown. Cardiff Central has fast trains from London, Bristol and the Midlands. Across the Severn, see golf courses near Bristol and golf courses near Gloucester. For a wider view, read our guide to golf in Wales or our UK golf breaks guide.
