The city courses

Edinburgh Leisure runs six public courses inside the city, and you need no membership or handicap. Braid Hills sits on a hillside south of the city, and the Wee Braids beside it is a shorter nine-hole course. Carrick Knowe lies in the west, Craigentinny in the north-east and Silverknowes near the Forth shore. Portobello is a nine-hole course by the seaside suburb of the same name.

East Lothian: the golf coast

Muirfield is home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who drew up thirteen rules at Leith in 1744. The course has hosted the Open sixteen times, most recently in 2013, and visitor days are few. Gullane has three links courses, so it is easier to book.
