The Ayrshire links coast

Head south-west on the A77 and links courses line the shore from Irvine down to Turnberry. Our guide to the best links golf courses puts them in context.

Royal Troon has hosted the Open ten times, most recently in 2024. Its par-3 8th, the Postage Stamp, is just 123 yards. The club also has a second course, the Portland. Prestwick is where the Open began, in 1860, and it hosted 24 Opens in all.

Western Gailes and Gailes Links lie side by side near Irvine. Gailes Links belongs to Glasgow Golf Club, founded in 1787. Dundonald Links is a modern links nearby, and Kilmarnock (Barassie) sits on the same coast.

Turnberry, at the southern end, staged the 1977 Open, when Tom Watson beat Jack Nicklaus in the "Duel in the Sun". The Trump Organization has owned the resort since 2014.

Golf in and around the city

Haggs Castle is a parkland club on the south side. Cathkin Braes sits on high ground south of the city, so the wind can be strong. Cawder, at Bishopbriggs, has two courses north of the city.

Loch Lomond Golf Club opened in 1993 on a course by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, and it hosted the Scottish Open from 2001 to 2010. It is a private club, so ordinary visitors rarely play it.

Public golf and getting there

Glasgow Life runs two public courses: Littlehill, an 18-hole course in the north, and Knightswood, a nine-hole course in the west. For 2026/27, adult rates at Littlehill start from £10.50 for 18 holes in winter and £16.50 in summer. Knightswood starts from £6.50 in winter and £10.50 in summer, and juniors pay half (checked 11 October 2026).

The A77 runs south through Kilmarnock to the Ayrshire coast, and the A82 runs north-west along the Clyde towards Loch Lomond. Trains from Glasgow Central serve Troon, Prestwick and Ayr, which makes a car-free links day easy to plan.
