Erskine Golf Club was founded in 1904 in Dunbartonshire, a historic county on the north bank of the River Clyde to the west of Glasgow, where the river widens toward its firth on the way to the Atlantic. Dunbartonshire's landscape runs from flatter, more industrial ground close to the Clyde itself up toward the southern edge of the Highlands, with Loch Lomond and the hills around it forming the county's northern boundary. The area grew historically around shipbuilding and engineering tied to the river, and golf clubs founded here in the early twentieth century, Erskine among them, were part of a broader wave of course-building across west-central Scotland as the sport grew alongside the region's industrial prosperity. Sitting within commuting distance of Glasgow, the club occupies ground shaped by that same estuarine landscape, with the wide waters of the Clyde never far away and the hills of the southern Highlands visible to the north.
