Ghyll Golf Club

Ghyll Golf Club traces its origins to a meeting held on 11 October 1907, when eleven local men, among them a physician, a schoolmaster and several cotton manufacturers, gathered at a café in Earby to propose forming a golf club. Their founding terms set an entrance fee of five shillings and annual subscriptions of one and a half guineas for gentlemen and one guinea for ladies, figures that give some sense of the club's origins among the professional and manufacturing families of the area at the turn of the twentieth century. The club has continued at Colne in Lancashire ever since, on ground shaped by the Pennine hills that separate this part of East Lancashire from the Yorkshire border. Colne and the neighbouring towns of Earby and Barnoldswick grew up around the cotton trade that funded much of the club's early membership, and that industrial history remains part of the area's identity even as the mills themselves have closed. More than a century on, Ghyll continues to draw members and visitors from across this corner of Lancashire, with its course set among the valleys and rising ground typical of the Pennine fringe.
