Cottingham is a large village in the East Riding of Yorkshire, on the northern edge of Hull and within the HU16 postcode area. It sits close to the Humber estuary, with the market town of Beverley a few miles to the north and the city of Hull immediately to the south. The village has long served as a residential area for Hull, with the University of Hull's campus close by, and retains a village-scale high street and a parish church with a tall spire that is a landmark across the flat Holderness plain. The wider East Riding is low-lying, drained farmland running east to the Yorkshire coast and south to the Humber, historically given over to arable agriculture and, closer to the estuary, industry linked to the port of Hull. Road and rail links from Cottingham run into Hull and on to York and Leeds, placing the area within reach of West Yorkshire golf as well as the East Riding coast. The HU postcode district covers Hull and its surrounding villages, of which Cottingham is one of the largest, sitting between the city and the open countryside of the Wolds to the west.
