Lanark Golf Club

Founded in 1851, Lanark is one of the older golf clubs in Scotland, predating the game's major expansion in the closing decades of the nineteenth century by several decades. The club sits above the town of Lanark in South Lanarkshire, close to the Clyde valley, a landscape of wooded gorges and farmland that runs south-east from Glasgow towards the Southern Uplands. Lanark itself is best known beyond golf for New Lanark, the restored eighteenth-century mill village on the river below the town, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The course plays to a par of 70 over eighteen holes and measures 6,428 yards, a length that places it among the more substantial inland courses in this part of Scotland rather than a short or executive layout. Its longevity, stretching back more than 170 years, means the club has been part of the town's identity since well before Lanarkshire's twentieth-century industrial and mining history reshaped much of the surrounding county. The elevated position above the Clyde valley gives the area a cooler, more exposed climate than the valley floor itself.
