Poulton-le-Fylde sits on the Fylde plain, the flat agricultural coastal strip between Preston and Blackpool that gives this part of Lancashire its name. The town predates its better-known neighbour Blackpool by centuries, having been the area's market centre when Blackpool was still a scattering of coastal cottages, and it retains an older, more settled character than the resort a few miles down the road. A nine-hole course of 2,863 yards and par 35 fits comfortably within this flat, low-lying landscape, where the Fylde's rich farmland, historically given over to dairy and market gardening, runs almost to the Irish Sea coast. The sea air and open, largely treeless plain typical of the Fylde bring an exposed character to golf played here, closer to a links test than the wooded parkland found further inland in Lancashire. Blackpool's promenade and tower are only a short drive away, but Poulton itself remains a working market town rather than a resort, giving the club a distinctly local, unhurried setting away from the seafront crowds.
