Walmersley Golf Club
Walmersley Golf Club is located just north of Bury town centre, on ground that begins to climb toward the West Pennine Moors and the wider belt of moorland separating Bury from the Rossendale Valley to the west. Bury itself grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution around textile milling before developing into the residential and market town it is today, sitting at the northern edge of Greater Manchester where the built-up area gives way fairly quickly to open hill country. Walmersley, a residential district on Bury's northern fringe, places the golf club within that transitional landscape, close enough to the town centre for convenient access while backing onto ground that rises noticeably toward the moors. Clubs positioned along this edge of Greater Manchester typically make use of the changing gradient between valley floor and open moorland, giving courses in the area more variation in elevation than the flatter parkland found further into the conurbation. For golfers based around Bury, Walmersley offers a course within easy reach of the town while retaining the hillier character that comes with sitting so close to the Pennine moorland edge.
