West Linton Golf Club

West Linton lies in the hills of the former county of Peeblesshire, on the southern edge of the Pentland Hills and within reach of Upper Tweeddale, roughly twenty minutes' drive from Edinburgh. The golf club was founded in 1890 by Robert Millar, a local schoolmaster, and began as a nine-hole layout on the moorland above the village. James Braid, the five-time Open Champion who went on to design courses across Scotland, advised on improvements in 1926, and the club is now listed on the James Braid Golf Trail. The course was extended to eighteen holes in 1972 using additional land acquired for the purpose, and returns a par of 69 over moorland terrain, with views taking in Mendick Hill and the wider Pentland range. The clubhouse sits above the closing three holes. West Linton has offered equal membership to men and women since its founding, a policy that predates equivalent moves at many Scottish clubs by decades. The club also offers non-playing membership and arranges society packages that combine a round of golf with catering.
