Ashford sits in the Spelthorne district of Surrey, between Sunbury-on-Thames and Staines-upon-Thames close to the River Thames, in an area that was part of Middlesex until the county boundary changes of 1965. The district lies on flat gravel terrace land close to Heathrow Airport and the M25, threaded by several channels of the Thames and by reservoirs built through the twentieth century to supply London. Ashford Manor Golf Club was established here in 1898 and today plays as an 18-hole parkland course of 6,400 yards, with tree-lined fairways and well-bunkered approaches to the greens. The clubhouse occupies the original Ashford Manor house and overlooks the course. The club is associated with the amateur golfer Harold Horsfall Hilton, marked by a bronze statue in the clubhouse lobby. By 1907-08 the club was well established and prosperous, and that year saw a new Smoking Room and Billiard Room built, now known as the Spike Bar. Visitors are welcome Monday to Friday, and after 2pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. The club address is Fordbridge Road, Ashford, Middlesex, TW15 3RT.
