Canons Brook Golf Club

Canons Brook Golf Club was designed by Sir Henry Cotton, one of British golf's most successful players of the twentieth century, a three-time Open Champion who also represented the country in four Ryder Cups before turning to course design. His layout at Canons Brook covers 112 acres and plays over 18 holes to 6,706 yards, with a brook running through the property that gives the course its name and comes into play at several points, catching shots from golfers who fail to account for it. The 17th, known locally as Death or Glory, is a short par four of around 350 yards that nonetheless captures the strategic demands Cotton built into the design, where length is less important than accuracy and course management. Now matured over more than fifty years, the layout has settled into its landscape, with established tree growth and turf conditions typical of a course of this age. Canons Brook sits in Essex, within the Lee Valley area near Harlow, and its combination of a recognised designer's pedigree and a genuine water hazard running through the round gives it a distinct identity among Essex parkland courses.
