East Herts Golf Club was founded in 1899 and is set around Hamels Mansion, near Buntingford in the rural, less-developed north-eastern corner of Hertfordshire. Buntingford is a small market town on the old Roman road of Ermine Street, in an area of the county that stayed largely agricultural even as much of southern Hertfordshire filled in with London commuter development through the twentieth century. The SG9 postcode covers this quieter stretch of countryside towards the Cambridgeshire border, where the land is given over to arable farming and parkland estates rather than suburban growth. Hamels Park, on whose grounds the club sits, is one of several historic estates in this part of the county, with mature parkland trees and a landscape shaped by centuries of estate management. The club's founding in 1899 places it among the older golf clubs in Hertfordshire, predating much of the residential expansion that later reshaped the county to its south.
The club dates back to 1899, giving it roughly 127 years of history in Hertford.
