High Wycombe sits in a gap cut through the Chiltern Hills by the River Wye, and the beech-wooded chalk slopes rising on either side of the town are the defining feature of this part of Buckinghamshire. The Chilterns here are steep-sided and heavily wooded in places, a landscape of hangers and hollows rather than open downland, and a golf club built into these hills inherits that terrain directly rather than having it landscaped in. An 18-hole course with a par of 69 laid across chalk contours of this kind is likely to move up and down through the folds of the escarpment rather than run flat, with the beech cover typical of the Chilterns providing natural definition between holes. High Wycombe's position on the old coaching road between London and Oxford, and its later growth as a furniture-manufacturing town, mean the club sits within reach of both the M40 corridor and the wider Chiltern Hills, which stretch south-west towards Marlow and the Thames.
