Harpenden Golf Club was founded in 1894, giving it more than 130 years of continuous history as a members' club serving the town. Harpenden sits just off the A1081 north of St Albans, within commuting distance of London via the Thameslink line, and has grown from a Victorian-era market town into one of the more sought-after commuter towns in this part of the country. The club's 18-hole course dates from that same late-Victorian period of English golf club formation, when towns within reach of the expanding railway network established courses for a growing professional and commuting membership. Harpenden's setting combines the arable and pasture land typical of this part of eastern England with the wooded commons that survive around the town itself. The club's long history places it among the older established clubs in the area, predating much of the town's twentieth-century suburban growth.
