Herefordshire Golf Club

Herefordshire Golf Club, at Wormsley, was established in 1896, making it the oldest golf club in the county. The current eighteen-hole course dates from a 1932 redesign carried out by James Braid, one of the most influential golf course architects of the era, whose work replaced the club's original layout. The course sits on high ground with views extending towards the Shropshire Hills, the Brecon Beacons and the Malvern Hills, giving several holes an outlook well beyond the immediate Herefordshire countryside. Alongside its golf, the club's setting and clubhouse are used to host weddings and other private events, making use of the views and grounds beyond the golfing calendar alone. Braid's 1932 design has remained the basis of the course for close to a century, giving Herefordshire Golf Club a settled, long-established layout rather than one that has been repeatedly remodelled. The club's status as the oldest in the county, combined with a course by one of British golf's best-known early twentieth-century architects, gives it a stronger claim to historical significance than most of its neighbours.
