Lees Hall Golf Club

Lees Hall began in 1907 as a nine-hole course on the southern side of Sheffield, before being extended to a full eighteen holes in 1911. The layout was the work of Alex Herd, who had won the Open Championship in 1902, and his parkland routing still forms the basis of the course today. Set on rising ground above the city, the course occupies a hilltop position that gives players a wide outlook across much of Sheffield as they move between holes, a feature that has remained constant even as the surrounding suburbs have grown up around the club. The elevation also shapes the character of individual holes, with changes in gradient adding to the demands of the round beyond simple length. As one of the older clubs in the city, Lees Hall has retained its early twentieth-century parkland design through more than a century of continuous play, and the connection to a major championship winner in Herd gives the course a notable place in Sheffield's golfing history.
