Market Drayton Golf Club was founded in 1906 and plays over eighteen holes in the market town of Market Drayton, close to the Shropshire and Cheshire border in the northern part of the Welsh Marches. This is flat to gently undulating dairying and arable country, quite different from the hillier ground further south and west in Shropshire, and the club's position on the county boundary gives it a catchment drawing from both counties. Market Drayton itself is a small town known historically for gingerbread baking and its cattle market, sitting on the River Tern within a landscape of mixed farmland and small woodland. Founded in 1906, the club predates the First World War by nearly a decade, placing it among the earlier generation of clubs established in this corner of the Marches as golf spread beyond the country's traditional Scottish and southern English strongholds. Its eighteen-hole course has been in continuous operation for well over a century, making it one of the longer-established golfing options serving the north Shropshire and south Cheshire border area.
