Monkton Park (Par Three) Golf Club
Chippenham sits on the Bristol Avon in north Wiltshire, a market town whose old core clusters around the river crossing that gave the settlement its early importance, with the wider county beyond dominated by rolling chalk and limestone country running south towards Salisbury Plain. Monkton Park, from which the club takes its name, is a public park on the edge of the town centre, one of a number of green spaces along the Avon given over to recreational use as Chippenham expanded through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries from a small market town into a significant railway and manufacturing centre on the Great Western main line. As its name suggests, this is a par-three course, a format aimed at shorter, quicker rounds and often used to introduce newer golfers to the game without the time or cost commitment of a full-length course. Wiltshire's mix of river valleys and open chalk downland gives the county a varied golfing landscape, from flatter valley floor courses like this one to the more exposed downland layouts further south and east.
