Thornbury lies north of Bristol in South Gloucestershire, close to the banks of the Severn Estuary and within sight of the two Severn crossings that link England to south Wales. The town sits on a shelf of flat, low-lying ground above the estuary's tidal reach, an area historically given over to market gardening and dairy farming before the motorway network reached out from Bristol and Almondsbury to bring it within the city's orbit. An 18-hole course of 6,300 yards here sits on that reclaimed estuarine land, open enough to catch the wind that comes off the Severn with little to interrupt it. Thornbury's own high street and its ruined Tudor castle give the wider town a historic core, while the course's position just off the M5 corridor makes it a convenient stop for golfers moving between Bristol, Gloucester and the Welsh side of the estuary. The flat character of this stretch of the Severn Vale contrasts with the Cotswold escarpment rising to the east.
