Uphall Golf Club

Uphall sits in West Lothian, between Livingston and Broxburn, in country shaped by the shale-oil industry that once dominated this part of central Scotland. The club dates from 1895 and took its ground, known as Burn Parks, on lease from the Houston Estate at thirty pounds a year. Who laid out the holes was never recorded, and there is reason to think golf was played on the land before any club existed. Forty-three people made up the original membership, each paying an annual subscription of ten shillings and sixpence; that figure was later cut by half in an effort to draw more players in. A formal re-opening followed in 1905, and a Silver Cup was presented by Captain Cumming when he left the club. Parkland turf carries the present course, which plays to a par of 69. The club describes itself as a members' organisation running both social and competitive golf, and the surrounding district places it within easy reach of Edinburgh to the east and the Forth valley towns to the north.
