Wells Golf Club

Wells Golf Club was founded in 1893 on high ground overlooking the cathedral city of Wells in Somerset, with the course laid out among the Mendip Hills on the city's outskirts. The 18-hole parkland layout runs to 6,004 yards and plays to a par of 70, with a Standard Scratch Score of 69. From its higher ground the course takes in views across Wells itself, including the medieval cathedral, and further afield towards Glastonbury Tor and the wider Mendip landscape that includes Cheddar Gorge and the Wookey Hole caves. Among the course's more notable holes is the 13th, a demanding par five where a ditch crosses the fairway twice, requiring careful placement of the second shot, while a short dogleg par four elsewhere on the course can be driven by golfers with sufficient length off the tee. The club maintains a clubhouse, driving range and practice facilities, and welcomes visitors, societies and new members throughout the week. Wells itself is one of England's smaller cities, built around its cathedral and market square, and the golf club's elevated position on the edge of the Mendips gives players a sense of the wider West Country countryside beyond the city boundaries.
