Bonnyton Golf Club

Bonnyton Golf Club's course was shaped by Alister MacKenzie, the architect later responsible for Augusta National, who worked on the design between March 1922 and June 1923. The course was formally opened with an exhibition match featuring George Duncan, Abe Mitchell, J. H. Kirkwood and Walter Hagen, a golfer who went on to win multiple major championships. That pedigree gives the club a design lineage shared with some of the most significant courses built during the interwar period, when MacKenzie was developing the strategic principles that would later define his best-known work in the United States. Located on the south side of Glasgow, the club today combines its historic layout with modern facilities, including custom club fitting and PGA coaching lessons available to members and visitors. Booking systems are in place for both members and visiting golfers, allowing tee times to be reserved in advance. The course itself reflects MacKenzie's characteristic use of natural contours and strategically placed hazards rather than heavy earthworks, an approach that was still relatively unusual in Scottish golf course design at the time it was built. Bonnyton remains a working example of that early MacKenzie design philosophy on the outskirts of Glasgow.
