Bungay & Waveney Golf Club

Bungay & Waveney Golf Club is based in Bungay, a small market town in Suffolk that sits right on the River Waveney where it forms the boundary with Norfolk. The town's postcode falls within the Norfolk postal area even though Bungay itself lies just south of the river on the Suffolk bank, a quirk that reflects how closely the two counties interlock along this stretch of the valley. Bungay grew up around a Norman castle built by the Bigod family in the twelfth century, and the ruins of its keep and gatehouse still stand in the town centre. A serious fire in 1688 destroyed much of the older town, and the rebuilding that followed left Bungay with a notable stock of Georgian brick buildings around its market place. The town is also tied to the local legend of Black Shuck, a spectral black dog said to have appeared during a violent storm at St Mary's Church in 1577, a story still marked around the town today. The surrounding Waveney valley is flat, low-lying farmland and water meadow, typical of the Broads-adjacent countryside separating north Suffolk from south Norfolk, with the river itself popular for boating trips towards the coast.
