Chester-le-Street Golf Club

Chester-le-Street takes its name from a Roman fort, later rebuilt into the market town that today sits on the River Wear between Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne. The golf club shares the town's name and lies within the same stretch of County Durham, an area shaped by its coalmining past more than by any distinctive natural landscape, though the Wear valley itself gives the immediate surroundings a green, riverside character. Chester-le-Street grew rapidly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as the Durham coalfield expanded, and much of the town's built environment dates from that period, with the older medieval core concentrated around the parish church. The town sits almost exactly midway between Durham city and Newcastle, both a short journey away along the A167 or the East Coast main line, giving the area a strongly urban catchment despite its position within the wider Durham countryside. The Wear continues north-east from here towards the coast at Sunderland.
