About this course

Wilton Golf Club began in 1952 as a recreation club for staff of the ICI plant at Wilton, and the original nine holes, laid out by the architect J. Morrison of Colt, Allison & Morrison, opened two years later on ground overlooking Wilton Castle. Membership grew quickly enough that the course was doubled to eighteen holes in 1966, and a new clubhouse followed in 1967; by 1974 the membership roll had passed a thousand. A further, purpose-built clubhouse went up in 1979 and has been added to since. The layout sits within parkland near Redcar, on the edge of the North Yorkshire coast. The club holds status as a Community Amateur Sports Club and has set out commitments around sustainable management of its grounds. Visitors are accepted throughout the year; a members' booking system controls the tee sheet, and non-members without a personal introduction can only reserve a time from mid-morning onward. The club uses a coded course-status system covering preferred lies, fairway mats, trolley and buggy restrictions, and temporary greens, updated to reflect ground conditions on any given day. The clubhouse itself has recently passed to new ownership, continuing a history of change stretching back to its ICI origins.

Wilton Golf Club plays over 18 holes. The club dates back to 1952, giving it roughly 74 years of history in Durham.
