About this course

City of Newcastle Golf Club plays over eighteen holes with a design history that stretches back to the early twentieth century. The course was originally laid out by Harry Vardon before undergoing significant changes in 1913 at the hands of Alister MacKenzie, who reworked twelve of the eighteen holes. MacKenzie went on to become one of golf architecture's best-known names, later designing Augusta National, Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne, which gives this Newcastle course an unusual connection to some of the sport's most celebrated venues. That early twentieth-century redesign has shaped much of the course's character ever since, with MacKenzie's strategic approach to bunkering and green placement still evident across the holes he reworked. The club maintains an active fixture list, hosting club championships alongside junior and county-level matches throughout the season, and the clubhouse serves as a social hub for members beyond the golf itself. Visitors are welcomed alongside the regular membership, giving those interested in MacKenzie's early design work a chance to see it firsthand before comparing it with his later, more famous courses overseas. The combination of Vardon's original routing and MacKenzie's subsequent alterations makes the course a notable stop for anyone interested in golf course architecture history.
