Cockermouth Golf Club

Cockermouth stands at the meeting of the rivers Cocker and Derwent on the northern edge of the Lake District, a Cumbrian market town best known as the birthplace of William Wordsworth. Cockermouth Golf Club, at Embleton just outside the town, is a moorland course now around a century old, designed by James Braid, the same architect responsible for the King's and Queen's Courses at Gleneagles and the 1926 remodelling of Carnoustie ahead of that year's Open Championship, part of a body of work spanning more than two hundred courses across Scotland and the rest of the UK. The layout rewards precision over length. The 10th hole offers a shorter club as a lay-up option, with the fairway lying 119 yards from the tee and a cliff edge in play on the tee shot. The 6th, 7th and 8th are three of the four hardest holes on the course and run back to back, followed by two of the easiest, the par-three 9th and the short par-four 10th; the 13th plays to 478 yards. The club hosts county events and matches, is SafeGolf Accredited, and is a registered signatory of the R&A's Women in Golf Charter.
