Dunbar Golf Club dates back to 1856, making it one of the older established clubs on Scotland's East Lothian coast. The club sits beside the town of Dunbar itself, on the stretch of coastline along the Firth of Forth where a shoreline long associated with links golf runs east from Edinburgh through Musselburgh, Gullane and North Berwick before reaching Dunbar further along the coast. Dunbar was historically a fishing and trading harbour town, and the club's nineteenth-century founding places it within the same era that produced many of the region's best-known links courses. This stretch of coast combines firm, sandy coastal ground with a relatively dry climate for Scotland, making it one of the country's most concentrated golfing areas, and Dunbar's century-and-a-half of history reflects its place within that tradition rather than a more recent addition to the coastline.
