Winterfield Golf Club

Dunbar sits on the East Lothian coast, a fishing town built around a harbour tucked beneath the ruins of its medieval castle. The castle itself was largely reduced to rubble following sieges in earlier centuries, but its remaining stonework still stands above the rocks at the harbour mouth. The town is the birthplace of John Muir, the naturalist who went on to help found the US national park system, and a museum in the town centre now covers his life and the wider natural history of the coast around it. Dunbar's high street runs back from the shore into a compact town centre, with the wider coastline running west towards Belhaven Bay and its dunes and mudflats, and east towards the cliffs that mark this stretch of the Firth of Forth's southern shore. The area is known for a drier, sunnier climate than much of the rest of Scotland, sheltered as it is from the west by the Lammermuir Hills. Berwickshire lies further south along the coast, with the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed the larger settlement in that direction. Fishing and, more recently, tourism along this coastline have shaped the town's economy over the past two centuries.
