Formby Hall Golf Club

Formby Hall lies near Southport on the Sefton coast, a stretch of Merseyside and south-west Lancashire known internationally for its links golf, home to Royal Birkdale, Formby Golf Club and Hillside within a few miles of each other along the dune-backed coastline. The area's sandy, well-drained soil and dunes, built up over centuries by wind-blown sand off the Irish Sea, have made this one of the most concentrated stretches of links golf anywhere in England, drawing golfers from across the country each summer. The club plays over eighteen holes and sits within reach of both this coastal strip and the town of Southport itself, a Victorian seaside resort whose long promenade and Lord Street shopping street still reflect its nineteenth-century origins. Further inland, the flat mosslands around Southport have long supported market gardening, taking advantage of the rich peaty soil left behind as the coastline receded over past centuries. The wider area today combines golf tourism with commuter housing serving Liverpool to the south, and the club's position places it within this well-established golfing corner of the north-west coast.
