Lydd Golf Club

Lydd Golf Club is set on Romney Marsh, the flat expanse of reclaimed marshland stretching along the English Channel coast where Kent meets East Sussex. This is some of the lowest-lying ground in England, drained over centuries by a network of dykes and sewers to create the wide, open sheep pasture the marsh is still known for, with Dungeness and its shingle headland a short distance to the south. The course itself runs to 6,596 yards over 18 holes with a par of 71, a length that suits the flat, exposed terrain typical of the marsh, where wind off the Channel rather than elevation change tends to set the challenge. Lydd is one of the marsh's original Cinque Ports towns, and the surrounding landscape, big skies, long sightlines and very little in the way of natural shelter, is unlike almost anywhere else golf is played in the south-east. London lies roughly an hour's drive to the north-west, making the club a realistic day trip from the capital despite its remote, coastal setting.
