Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club occupies a peninsula on the Loughor Estuary at Llanelli, in Carmarthenshire, with Carmarthen Bay opening out to the south and the Gower Peninsula visible across the water. The course measures 7,121 yards, placing it among the longer layouts in Wales and closer to the yardages typically associated with tournament-standard golf than with a typical members' club. Llanelli grew up around the tinplate and steel industries of the nineteenth century, and the regeneration of its waterfront over the past two decades — of which the golf development is part — has reshaped a formerly industrial stretch of coastline into a leisure destination. The estuary here is tidal and features prominently in local wildlife interest, with wading birds a common sight at low tide. Carmarthenshire as a whole stretches from this southern coastline up into rural, largely agricultural land inland, making Machynys one of the county's more coastal and urban-facing golf settings.
