Marsden Golf Club

Marsden Golf Club was established in 1920 in the Pennine village of Marsden, above Huddersfield, where the course overlooks the Wessenden Valley as it climbs toward the moorland reservoirs beyond the village. The 18 holes measure a modest 5,702 yards, considerably shorter than many parkland courses, yet the layout is generally regarded as asking more of golfers than the yardage alone would suggest, relying on the valley's terrain and changes in elevation rather than length to create its challenge. New members and visitors are typically greeted warmly, a reputation that has followed the club through much of its history in this part of West Yorkshire. Marsden sits at the head of the Colne Valley, close to where the Pennine watershed separates Yorkshire from Lancashire, and the surrounding landscape of steep valley sides and open moor gives the course a setting quite different from the flatter parkland clubs found closer to Huddersfield town centre itself. Now more than a century old, the club has built its identity around this compact but demanding layout and its position within the Wessenden Valley, offering golfers a round shaped as much by the Pennine landscape as by any deliberate design feature.
