Woodsome Hall Golf Club

Woodsome Hall Golf Club's course was laid out by William Button, a professional brought in from Middlesbrough Golf Club, using local labour to open the 18 holes in June 1923. The opening was marked by an exhibition match in which Button played against Arthur Day, the professional at Ganton, giving the new course an association with one of Yorkshire's most established clubs from its earliest days. The routing has shifted since 1923: the original first hole is now played as the 18th, and the hole that originally closed the round, then a par six, is today the 9th. A new par three was added at what is now the 10th, while an earlier short hole near the present 16th was retired from the layout. These changes took the course from an original length of 5,001 yards up to more than 6,000 yards as the club adapted the round over subsequent decades. Woodsome Hall is based at Fenay Bridge, on the southern edge of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, an area of rolling Pennine-edge farmland typical of golf courses in this part of the county. Over a century since Button's original design, the club continues to operate from the same site with a layout that has grown considerably from its 1920s origins.
