Old Thorns Golf Club offers an 18-hole course playing to a par of 72, at Liphook near the Hampshire–Surrey border. Liphook sits in wooded, sandy heathland country on the edge of the South Downs, an area that also takes in Woolmer Forest and the Hampshire heaths, terrain long favoured for golf because it drains well and supports the kind of pine and heather cover found on the region's best-known courses. The par-72 layout is the standard length for a full 18-hole round, giving scope for a mix of longer and shorter holes across the course. Liphook itself is a small town with good road links toward Guildford, Haslemere and Petersfield, making the course reachable from across west Surrey and north Hampshire. The wider setting around Liphook, with its heath, woodland and scattered commons, is typical of this part of the Hampshire borders, and golf has been played on ground like it in the area since the late nineteenth century.
