Romsey Golf Club plays to a par of 69 over 5,718 yards, a modest length by modern standards but one that puts a premium on accuracy rather than distance. The second hole sets an early tone, an uphill par four lined by an avenue of conifers, while the closing stretch of the front nine offers two further par fours guarded by trees and a small stream that catches wayward shots. Two uphill par threes on the outward half are separated by a long par four that drops down a valley from a raised tee, rated the hardest hole on the course. The back nine opens with a shorter, downhill par three before a halfway house gives players a pause before the closing holes. From there, a sequence of par fours with doglegs, tree-lined fairways and well-placed bunkers rewards good driving and precise approach play. The finish brings three tempting par fours in succession, including a fifteenth that can be driven by those willing to take it on, before a walk to an eighteenth tee set against the course boundary. The home hole is an uphill par five that only the longest and straightest hitters can reach in two shots. Despite its modest overall length, the tight, tree-lined nature of the course tests golfers of every standard.
