Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh
Golf at Barnton, on the west side of Edinburgh, traces back through several earlier homes before settling at its present site. The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh dates its origins to 1735, having played first at Bruntsfield Links and later at old Musselburgh before moving to Barnton. The club is under 5 miles from both Edinburgh city centre and Edinburgh Airport, placing it within easy reach of the west end of the capital and the routes running out towards the Forth. The parkland course at Barnton was laid out originally by Willie Park Jr, with fairways run between mature trees including a number of specimen varieties, and the layout carries bunkering throughout. The clubhouse, on Whitehouse Road, is built in the Arts and Crafts style of the late Victorian period and houses items relating to the society's long history. Barnton itself lies among residential streets on the Edinburgh side of the Almond valley, with the Firth of Forth a short distance to the north. The society's postal address is 181 Whitehouse Road, Barnton, Edinburgh, EH4 6BU, and it can be reached by telephone on 0131 339 2075.
