Sand Moor Golf Club was founded in 1926 in Alwoodley, a district on the northern edge of Leeds where Alister Mackenzie, the Leeds-based doctor turned golf architect, had already made his name designing neighbouring courses. Mackenzie's hand is present in three of the club's four short holes, the 8th, 10th and 17th, with the 15th completing the set of par 3s. In the late 1960s, Henry Cotton advised on further changes to the layout, and more recently the architects Andy Watson and Ken Moodie have overseen updates including remodelled bunkers. Practice facilities include a 350-yard driving range with three covered bays and an external grass area, two practice nets, and a short game area built around a Mackenzie-style green with two practice bunkers, backed by a swing analysis studio. The clubhouse bar and lounge has a balcony overlooking both the 18th green and the putting green. Catering has been run by a new franchise since January 2026, previously based at Otley Golf Club and The Plough Inn, Wiggleswick. The club sits on Alwoodley Lane in an area of north Leeds known chiefly for its cluster of golf courses laid out in the early twentieth century.
