Bamford is a village in the Hope Valley, within the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire, set between the gritstone edges of Stanage and Bamford and the Derwent reservoirs to the north. The valley separates the dark gritstone moors of Bleaklow and Kinder Scout from the limestone country of the White Peak further south, and the village grew up around the Sheffield to Manchester railway line that still runs through it. Sickleholme Golf Club was founded here in 1898 and plays over undulating parkland across 18 holes, measuring 6,064 yards from the men's tees and 5,399 yards from the ladies' tees. The course lies 13 miles from Sheffield, 16 miles from Chesterfield and 15 miles from Glossop, and rarely closes over winter. The South African golfer Bobby Locke was fond enough of the 13th hole that he kept a painting of it in his home. Buggy users are required to keep to a designated route around the course, and mobile phone use is restricted to emergencies both on the course and in the clubhouse.
