Spalding Golf Club

Spalding sits in the heart of the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, in the flat, fertile fenland reclaimed from marsh and drained by generations of dykes and pumping stations since the seventeenth century. The town has long been associated with bulb growing and market gardening, its black peaty soil among the most productive arable land in England, and for much of the twentieth century Spalding hosted an annual flower parade celebrating that heritage. The golf club plays over eighteen holes to a par of 72 and measures 6,457 yards, a substantial length that places it among the longer courses in this part of eastern England. The surrounding fenland landscape is famously flat and open, criss-crossed by drainage channels and long, straight roads, with wide skies and few natural landmarks breaking the horizon. Spalding itself sits on the River Welland, which historically provided both a trade route and part of the drainage network that made this low-lying land farmable. The club's setting reflects that wider fenland character, a landscape shaped almost entirely by centuries of engineering rather than natural contour.
