Brancepeth Golf Club

Brancepeth Castle Golf Club was laid out in 1924 by Harry Colt, one of the most influential golf course architects of his generation, on land that had formerly served as the deer park of Brancepeth Castle in County Durham. The castle's stables and coach house were converted to form the clubhouse, giving the club a set of historic buildings unusual among golf courses of its era and linking the site directly to the estate's earlier use. Colt's design made use of the varied, wooded parkland that had been maintained for deer rather than agriculture, producing a course shaped by mature planting and the rolling contours typical of a historic designed landscape. The club, based in the village of Brancepeth just outside Durham city, remains open to both members and visiting golfers and offers food alongside its golfing facilities. Brancepeth itself is dominated by the castle, a much-altered medieval and later structure that continues to overlook the course from its position within the former deer park. The pairing of a nineteen-twenties Colt design with a deer park setting and castle outbuildings converted for clubhouse use gives Brancepeth a distinctive character among County Durham's golf clubs, rooted firmly in the history of the estate on which it was built.
