Bristol & Clifton Golf Club
Above the Avon Gorge on Bristol's western side, Clifton is a district of Georgian and Victorian terraces built as merchant wealth spread inland from the docks, with Brunel's suspension bridge and the open grass of the Downs as its defining landmarks. Golf has been played under the Bristol and Clifton name since 1891, the clubhouse following eight years later. Undulating ground carries a parkland layout, and England Golf has used the property for national events; among them, in 2021, the boys' amateur strokeplay championship played for the Carris Trophy. Summer brings stimpmeter readings above eleven on the putting surfaces. Drainage is good enough that closures are rare through the colder months, and temporary tees and greens are brought out only occasionally. Machinery and irrigation have both seen money spent on them in recent seasons, with a head greenkeeper and grounds staff responsible for upkeep. The setting places golfers a short distance from one of the most recognisable stretches of the city, where the gorge cuts between Clifton and Leigh Woods on the far bank.
