Carlyon Bay Golf Club forms part of a larger hotel and leisure estate covering around 250 acres above St Austell Bay in Cornwall. The eighteen-hole course runs to roughly 6,500 yards along clifftop ground overlooking the bay, with the elevation giving several holes clear views out across the water towards the Cornish coastline. Golf here is bundled with a wider range of leisure facilities available to hotel guests, including indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, tennis courts, a spa carrying an AA recommendation, and dining that has been recognised with an AA rosette. The rolling parkland character of the course, set above rather than directly on the shoreline, means the layout combines the shot-making demands of an inland course with the exposure and outlook typical of coastal golf. As one of the larger integrated golf and hotel developments in Cornwall, Carlyon Bay draws both destination golfers on a break and local club players, with the scale of the estate allowing additional activities such as a shorter approach course and putting areas alongside the main eighteen holes. St Austell Bay itself is one of the more sheltered stretches of the south Cornwall coast, and the clifftop position of the course makes the most of that setting throughout the round.
