Outlane Golf Club

Outlane sits on high ground west of Huddersfield, in the Pennine hills that separate West Yorkshire from Lancashire along the route the M62 now follows through this stretch of the range. The village grew up along an old turnpike road and later gained prominence from its position near Standedge, one of the highest points reached by road, rail and canal anywhere in England. Golf at Outlane is played across this elevated, exposed landscape, on ground that rises well above the Colne and Calder valleys running through Huddersfield below. The wider area has a long association with golf on hillside and moorland-edge sites, a legacy of Victorian and Edwardian club-founding, when land above the industrial valleys was cheaper and offered clearer outlooks than sites nearer the mills and terraces. From the higher parts of the course there are views back across Huddersfield and toward the Colne Valley, with weather changing quickly given the exposure of the site. The postcode places the club in the HD3 area on the western edge of the town, within easy reach of the motorway network that now defines this part of the Pennine crossing, a landscape shaped as much by transport history as by golf.
